What Makes Meñakoz Unique for Big Wave Surfing?

Just a few kilometers from our school, Meñakoz stands as the ultimate challenge for any lover of big wave surfing. This break, known for its impressive power and size, can reach heights of up to 7 meters on epic days, offering an unforgettable experience for those brave enough to face it.

What makes Meñakoz so special is not just its size but also its untamed character. Here, every wave is unique, and every session is a test of skill and courage that only the most experienced can overcome.

How to Get to Meñakoz from Peña Txuri

If you’re coming from our school, reaching Meñakoz is very straightforward. Just take the BI-2122 towards Sopelana and follow the signs to Barrika. In just a few minutes, you’ll arrive at the small parking lot that marks the start of the trail to this wild beach.

The access is part of the experience: a short but sometimes slippery path that leads you to one of the most iconic spots for Basque big surf. We recommend bringing good footwear and ensuring your gear is well-prepared before heading down.

Features That Challenge the Bravest

At Peña Txuri, we live surfing intensely, and few waves excite us as much as Meñakoz. This break is a powerful right-hand wave that breaks over a rocky bottom, making it an extreme challenge even for the most experienced surfers.

As the technical director of our school, Aritza Saratxaga has surfed Meñakoz countless times and always emphasizes that this wave demands maximum respect and concentration. “There’s no room for error here. Every session is a lesson in humility and perseverance,” he proudly tells us.

The History of Meñakoz: Where It All Began

In the Basque Country, Meñakoz holds a special place in surfing history. In the 70s, this was the stage where the first big wave surfing community was born. Raúl Dourdil was one of the pioneers who challenged this wave for the first time, and since then, generations of surfers have followed in his footsteps.

From our school, we can’t help but feel a special connection to this place. Many of our students have started on nearby beaches like Sopelana, dreaming of the day they can face this legendary wave. It’s a constant source of inspiration for us and for the entire local surfing community.

Aritza Saratxaga: Our Bond with Meñakoz

Aritza Saratxaga, our technical director, is a regular at Meñakoz and one of the surfers who knows this break best. Whenever the conditions are ideal, Aritza doesn’t miss the opportunity to dive into the water and face this wave with the same passion as always.

“For me, Meñakoz is more than just a spot. It’s a place that teaches you to respect the sea and discover yourself,” Aritza says. As a school, we’re proud to have someone like him, whose experience and love for surfing inspire us every day.

When Is the Best Time to Surf at Meñakoz?

If you’ve ever wondered when is the best time to visit Meñakoz, the answer is clear: between September and February. During these months, Atlantic swells bring the most consistent and spectacular waves.

From Peña Txuri, we always recommend our students carefully observe the conditions before planning a session here. Factors such as wind and tide are crucial to making the most of this wave and ensuring a safe experience.
