At Peña Txuri Surf Eskola, we know how important it is to choose the right wetsuit to enjoy surfing all year round. Our students, especially when the winter season begins, often ask us:
- What thickness should my wetsuit be?
- Do I need a hood, booties, or gloves?
- Which brand is the best for beginners or progression?
These questions are entirely normal if you’re not familiar with surfing, but making the right choice can make the difference between a comfortable session and a frustrating experience. In this article, we’ll answer all these questions to help you make the best decision.
What Should You Consider When Choosing Your Surf Wetsuit?
Wetsuit Thickness According to Water Temperature
The thickness of the wetsuit is crucial for keeping you warm and comfortable in the water. At Peña Txuri Surf Eskola, we especially recommend 5/4 mm or 4/3 mm suits for the coldest months of winter, such as February and March. This is because, during this time, water temperatures in the Basque Country can drop to 10°C to 12°C due to ice melt.
- Below 8°C: 6/5 mm wetsuit with hood, gloves, and booties.
- Between 8°C and 12°C: 5/4 mm or 4/3 mm wetsuit, booties, and neoprene hood. Gloves are optional.
- Between 13°C and 17°C: 4/3 mm or 3/2 mm wetsuit.
- Above 18°C: 2 mm short wetsuit or just a rash guard in temperatures over 23°C.
In our winter lessons, we always recommend complementing the wetsuit with booties to protect your feet from the cold. A hood is also important since most body heat is lost through the head, while gloves are optional depending on individual cold sensitivity.
Types of Wetsuit Closures
Wetsuits come in different types of closures, each with its own advantages:
- Back Zip: Easy to put on but less insulating.
- Front Zip: Warmer and more flexible.
- Zip-Free: Maximum flexibility but requires more effort to put on.
At Peña Txuri Surf Eskola, we recommend front zip wetsuits for those looking for a balance between comfort and thermal insulation, especially during colder months.
What Wetsuit Size to Choose?
A wetsuit should fit like a second skin without restricting movement. To determine if it’s your size:
- There should be no air pockets between the wetsuit and your skin.
- Seams should not cause chafing.
- You should be able to move your arms and legs easily without water entering.
If you’re unsure, at Peña Txuri, we help you try different models and brands to find the perfect fit.
